Before submitting we strongly recommend you read some of our previously published work. We accept submissions over three areas: Fiction, Poetry and Kid Lit (writing for Middle Grade and Young Adult audiences).
Northern Gravy welcomes submissions from UK & Ireland writers of any background, including first-time writers. We welcome work from members of groups or communities typically under-represented within literature, whether or not the work addresses this. In order to submit to Northern Gravy, you must be a UK or Ireland writer. While we love receiving submissions, if you weren’t either born in the UK or Ireland, or currently reside in the UK or Ireland, we will have to discard your submission without reading it.
We believe in paying writers. Those we select for publication will be paid a fee of £100 for the use of their work, which we will partner with the writer to edit and prepare. We also believe in not charging for submissions. Submissions are FREE.
All submissions should be previously unpublished.
Please note that we cannot offer feedback on unsuccessful submissions.
We welcome simultaneous submissions but ask that you notify us as soon as your work is accepted elsewhere.
We accept Fiction, Poetry and KidLit (writing for Middle Grade or Young Adult audiences, poetry or prose). If you choose to submit to more than one category, please send a separate email for each submission. Do not group submissions together.
Our guideline word count for Fiction and KidLit prose is a maximum of 2000 words. Poems no more than 40 lines. We are happy to read: one story or up to four poems.
Submissions should be in one .doc or .docx attachment (direct to the email, not via Google Docs, etc.) and in a non-quirky font. Prose submissions should be double-spaced and all submissions should be in a minimum of size 12.
